Gunite is a porous concrete mixture that allows for better expansion / contraction tolerance and is less prone to cracking, shifting, or sinking.
After a hole is excavated for a new pool, steel bars, known as rebar are carefully placed to form a rebar grid-like cage like frame that extends throughout the entire stretch of the future pool, gunite is applied through a high-pressure hose. Once it cures (dries), gunite becomes rock hard, forming a thick, solid structure. Next the plaster is applied.

A vinyl liner pool has metal or concrete shell walls with sand and cement at the bottom. Then the custom vinyl liner is installed before the water. Vinyl liners typically lock into their top edge, called a bead, into a track located on the bottom of the coping, which is at deck level.
